Description: The Shoemakers Museum in Street, Somerset opened in September 2025 and invites visitors to explore 200 years of shoemaking heritage—from the very beginnings of Clarks in this village to its global cultural impact. Featuring four permanent galleries, the museum presents a rich mix of industrial, social and design history alongside a collection of over 100,000 objects. It’s a place where local stories, craftsmanship and innovation meet in a beautifully restored historic complex—making it both a heritage destination and a living celebration of footwear, design and community.

Project Title: The Old Hayloft

Project Title: Refurbishment of 36 & 37 Boutport Street

Description: This project is part of the larger programme of work, titled Future High Street Fund, Barnstaple. 36 & 37 Boutport Street form a prominent group of listed buildings in a strategically important location in the centre of Barnstaple at a junction with Butchers Row and the historic listed pannier market. When the project commenced, 36 Boutport Street was a vacant, dilapidated building that was structurally unsafe, full of pigeons and gradually falling down. 37 Boutport Street had been demolished in 1990 and the site had been left vacant as a blight on the town for the following 34 years.
36 Boutport St is a Grade II listed building and has been renovated and converted into a co-working building above the ground floor restaurant and café, together with a new 3 flat Annexe to the rear, including a wheelchair accessible home. 37 Boutport St has been redeveloped to create 10 ground floor workshops and 10 flats above. This provides a boost to the local economy whilst also providing an opportunity for people to live and work in one place.
37 Boutport St includes a new ‘street’ that connects newly renovated Barnstaple Central Carpark to the rear to Butchers Row.
Project Title: Upgrade of Queen St/Bear St Carparks, including the creation of a new entrance from Alexandra Road
Location: Barnstaple, Devon

Description: This project is part of the larger programme of work, titled Future High Street Fund, Barnstaple. Access to the carparks was convoluted, poorly signed and hampered by an historic layout which had the short stay and long stay carpark separated by a solid partition precluding movement between them. The project created a new entrance from Alexandra Road, it removed the partition between short and long stay and the landscaping provided a welcoming, safe and well lit environment for shoppers. The new ‘street’ through 37 Boutport St connects the newly named Barnstaple Central carpark with the town centre and provides easy access for shoppers to make Barnstaple a more inviting destination.
Project Title: Brynsworthy Environment Centre

Description: The project also included making the recycling operations quicker and safer for staff and contractors by reorganising it and separating the Council ‘drop off’ vehicles from the Contractor ‘pick up’ vehicles. More specifically, this included a new modular building for waste & recycling staff, reconfiguration the layout of the processing hall, cleaning and painting the existing hall steelwork; construction of a new weighbridge; construction of a new building to store the recycled glass and to provide a new lorry Loading Area; including alterations to existing CCTV, external lighting and a new path and pedestrian crossing.
Project Title: Paddock Cabin, Poole Farm

Completion Date: In 3 phase, with the last phase completing in July 2026
Description: The project comprises a facility to serve as a training centre, classroom, eco-therapy venue, hireable venue space and a hub for wildlife watching. The visible timber structure, is used 7 days per week by a variety of different groups of different age groups, including adults and minors/ young people, including SEN Clients, Plymouth. The larch timber was grown in the south west of England and milled in Bristol. The design is entirely natural and includes an intensive green roof which enables the proposal to effectively blend with its natural surroundings as well as evoke a sense of inside/outside space. A long ramp makes the building accessible, and the stilts mean that the building is lifted out of the flood plain. Internally, a timber sliding folding partition enables the users to separate the space for 2 different groups.
